Robo-Chicken[1] (also known as Mecha Chicken in the MS-DOS version)[2] is the mini-boss of Level 5 in the original Earthworm Jim video game.
It later appears in an alternate, airborne form, the Chicken Wing, as the final boss of Level 5.
Description[]
A creation of Professor Monkey-for-a-Head, this giant, ferocious mutated chicken in a mech suit guards the laboratory against trespassers. It also attempts to destroy Earthworm Jim to reclaim the Super Suit for its master, who originally created the Super Suit.
Appearances[]
First Form[]
First encounter (original Sega Genesis version of the game)
Robo-Chicken is first encountered at the end of Level 5, when Jim gets stuck in a chamber with it. Robo-Chicken will pull out a cannon before it clucks around the chamber with metal legs, attempting to prod Jim with the electrified prod at the front of its suit.
It also has ranged attacks in the form of tiny eggs that it will lay. These eggs will roll toward Jim, and explode with some force. It also occasionally takes flight for a short time, flying over Jim's head and attempting to drop egg rockets on him from above.
Robo-Chicken is fairly resistant to both Jim's worm head whip and Plasma Blaster. Although it can be hit by Mega-Chargers, it appears to take no real damage from one. The robo's only weakness is another one of the Professor's experiments - the mutant amoebas. Whipping the target at the top will cause one to fall on Robo-Chicken when it is below the drop chute. Robo-Chicken will be disabled when enough exploding amoebas have fallen on it. However, when the mutant amoebas miss, Robo-Chicken will laugh and cluck. Each time the Robo-Chicken is hit it will fire off three consecutive homing eggs. After 5 hits from mutant ameobas, Jim is teleported into another room.
Second Form (Chicken Wing)[]
The Chicken Wing
After dealing with the Robo-Chicken, Jim finds himself transported in an extremely long, seemingly endless vertical tunnel, where he is free falling with Robo-Chicken's new form, the Chicken Wing (which is essentially the Robo-Chicken without metal legs). It still retains it prod as a primary weapon. Spikes litter the two walls that will harm Jim and hinder but not damage the Chicken Wing.
Perhaps due to being significantly weakened in the first battle, the Chicken Wing can be harmed by Jim's Plasma Blaster and Whip this time around, with some significant effect, but every time the Chicken Wing is damaged, it will release a bomb that stays mostly put in its descent. The explosion of the bombs can be deflected back onto the Chicken Wing, damaging it further. Near its defeat, the Chicken Wing will, instead of bombs, fire off flying homing eggs (their explosion can also harm Chicken Wing). After about 20 hits of damage (Difficulty mode), the chicken finally explodes and is defeated for good, ending the level.
